Goldman names Applied Materials, Seagate, Microchip as tactical chip buys ahead of earnings

Goldman Sachs named Applied Materials, Seagate and Microchip as tactical ideas heading into third-quarter earnings, saying it sees a more constructive trading setup for semiconductor stocks after a sector pullback it attributed to significant de-risking. Analysts led by James Schneider said the sector has fallen sharply over the past two months, with the SOX index down 11% against a 4% gain for the S&P 500, in stark contrast to the 2Q setup when the bank signaled a more cautious tactical outlook ahead of results. Goldman expects Applied Materials to raise its margin targets and give a robust growth outlook at SEMICON West on October 13, ahead of mid-November earnings, with a strong report driven by DRAM and advanced logic and management speaking to a wafer fab equipment market growing toward $300 billion over time, though the stock rallied about 12% in the past week so expectations are elevated. For Seagate, Goldman forecasts a strong quarter on positive hard disk drive pricing and a supportive demand environment, projecting about 2% revenue upside and guidance roughly 3% above the Street, citing prudent supply strategy and advanced HAMR progress relative to competitors. Goldman also expects broad strength across end markets for Microchip, led by datacenter and aerospace and defense, with about 1% revenue upside and gross margin recovering to roughly 66% by the end of 2026, and its fiscal 2027 earnings estimate about 3% above consensus. The bank flagged downside risk tactically for Qualcomm, KLA and Western Digital, all rated Neutral, saying Qualcomm may be ahead of itself given strong expectations tied to agentic AI, KLA's results may lag peers as spending skews toward DRAM, and Western Digital should underperform Seagate.

Federal Circuit Remands ParkerVision v. Qualcomm Patent Case to District Court

The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit dismissed ParkerVision's expedited appeal for lack of jurisdiction and remanded its patent infringement case against Qualcomm back to the middle district of Florida. The Federal Circuit said the case will pick up where it was prior to the district court's Rule 54(b) order, leaving it to the district court's discretion how to proceed, and it declined to rule on the merits of the receiver claim construction. ParkerVision had appealed the district court's 3rd claim construction ruling, which resulted in a summary judgment dismissal of its receiver patent claims. On remand, the company will pursue a jury trial for infringement of its transmitter patent claims and preserve the right to appeal the receiver claim construction after a final ruling in the transmitter case, with damages of approximately $440 million sought for the transmitter portion, excluding potential interest. The Federal Circuit also denied ParkerVision's request to assign the case to a new district court judge. CEO Jeffrey Parker called the decision procedural and said the company remains confident in the strength of its patents.

Qualcomm Renews Apple Patent License Effective April 2027

Qualcomm announced in September 2026 that it had renewed its global patent license agreement with Apple, effective April 1, 2027, a move that significantly reduces near-term uncertainty around its QTL royalties. The renewal comes alongside a multi-year custom chip partnership with Amazon's AWS, which Qualcomm is counting on to underpin its data center goals of US$5.0 billion in fiscal 2027 and US$15.0 billion in fiscal 2029. Qualcomm also presented at the Humanoids Summit in Seoul and is expanding into data center and robotics solutions as it pushes to pair stable licensing income with new AI and cloud computing revenue streams. The company's narrative projects $60.0 billion in revenue and $11.5 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 10.8% yearly revenue growth and about a $2.2 billion earnings increase from $9.3 billion today. The biggest current risk, according to the analysis, is that diversification spending rises faster than new AI and cloud revenues materialize, while rising in-house chips at major OEMs could still pressure Qualcomm.

Qualcomm Renews Global Patent License With Apple From April 2027

Qualcomm said it has renewed its global patent license agreement with Apple, effective April 1, 2027. The updated deal covers Apple's continued access to Qualcomm's cellular technologies under a multi-year global patent license framework, and management indicated the renewed agreement is structured to support ongoing collaboration between the two smartphone heavyweights. The renewal reduces uncertainty around QTL licensing revenue tied to one of Qualcomm's largest customers and supports the view that its patent portfolio remains hard to replicate for premium smartphones. Qualcomm's narrative still hinges on reaching US$40b of non-handset QCT revenue by fiscal 2029 while managing pressure from reduced Apple modem exposure and smartphone cyclicality, so the extension helps visibility on QTL cash flows but does not replace the need to execute on automotive, IoT and the AWS-backed data center program. Investors will watch how Qualcomm breaks out QTL segment performance after 2027, including effective royalty rates and license coverage for 5G and future standards, along with any commentary on duration, scope or renewal terms with Apple in quarterly filings or earnings calls.

Qualcomm Renews Global Patent License Agreement With Apple

Qualcomm announced the renewal of its global patent license agreement with Apple, sending the wireless chipmaker's shares up 5.7% in the afternoon session. According to a press release published by Qualcomm, the renewed agreement officially takes effect on April 1, 2027, and allows the iPhone maker to continue using the chipmaker's patented wireless technologies in exchange for ongoing royalty payments. Because Apple represents a massive portion of the global smartphone market, the long-term extension removes a significant source of uncertainty and provides clear visibility into Qualcomm's high-margin future licensing revenue. Qualcomm is up 18.7% since the beginning of the year, but at $205.33 per share it still trades 18.2% below its 52-week high of $251.02 from May 2026. The stock has made 28 moves greater than 5% over the last year, and four days ago it gained 7.4% on news that positive bilateral talks between the U.S. and China eased trade tensions.

Qualcomm Renews Global Patent License With Apple, Terms Undisclosed

Qualcomm said on September 24 that it has renewed its global patent license agreement with Apple, with the new deal taking effect on April 1, 2027, when the existing one runs out. The chipmaker did not disclose the financial terms and did not say how long the new agreement runs, leaving investors to know the relationship continues without knowing on what basis. The licensing arm is where Qualcomm actually makes its money, collecting royalties on handsets it did not build, and the two companies spent 2017 and 2018 in a sprawling legal fight over exactly these royalties before settling on a six-year agreement that began in April 2019, which Apple later extended by two years to March 2027. Apple has started shipping its own modems, though teardowns this month still found Qualcomm silicon in the United States iPhone 18 Pro Max and across the iPhone 17 line, so chip revenue from Apple is going away more slowly than the headlines suggest, and the royalty stream is the part that survives that shift. Qualcomm shares fell 1.51% on the day of the announcement, then recovered 3.97% the following session, and the number to watch is licensing revenue once the new agreement begins, because that is where the terms will finally become visible.

Corning, Qualcomm and Lumentum to Showcase High-Density Optical Chip Links at ECOC 2026

Corning, Qualcomm and Lumentum plan to showcase a high-density die to die optical connectivity solution at ECOC 2026. The joint demo targets AI scale up architectures that require higher bandwidth, lower latency and tighter power budgets for chip interconnects, and the ECOC 2026 presentation will highlight massively parallel optical D2D links paired with high density fiber to support advanced AI data centers. The project taps Corning's existing role supplying fiber and optical technology to large infrastructure buyers rather than representing a completely new line of work, positioning its multimode fiber alongside Qualcomm's interface IP and Lumentum's VCSEL engines. The unresolved piece is commercial proof: the clearest early sign that this direction is working will be whether Corning starts pointing to concrete D2D or co packaged optics wins in its AI focused optical order book or in follow on agreements tied to the 2027 to 2032 style long term fiber deals already in place.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite Lands in Dell's $1,199 XPS Googlebook

Dell has selected Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chip for a flagship Googlebook, giving the wireless and computing-chip designer an early foothold in Google's new premium-laptop push. The $1,199 XPS Googlebook pairs the Snapdragon X Elite with a claimed battery life of up to 18 hours, a high-profile showcase for Qualcomm's Windows-rivaling PC ambitions. Google's broader rollout stretches across Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo, though the company has not disclosed how many of those machines will run Qualcomm silicon versus Intel processors, leaving unresolved whether Snapdragon can move from a showcase design into meaningful share across the wider Googlebook ecosystem. Qualcomm shares slipped approximately 0.3% to $193.59, a price that sits 10.32% above the $175.48 GF Value estimate, suggesting the market already prices in a healthy dose of future growth. One premium Dell win proves Snapdragon can compete for marquee designs, but the bigger catalyst would be repeat adoption across multiple manufacturers, stronger software compatibility and enough PC volume to make Qualcomm materially less dependent on smartphones.

Arm Stock's 46% Drawdown Tests $2 Billion Demand Claim

Arm's stock has swung on the same customer-demand figure three times in four months, with the chip designer plunging from an early-September peak near $452 in June to just under $244, a 46% drawdown reflecting a broader unwind of AI capital-spending optimism. On September 18, shares closed at $275.61, up 4.04%, after CEO Rene Haas told Jim Cramer that demand for Arm's technology has "never looked better." Haas has cited the AGI CPU demand figure before: Arm unveiled the chip in March with a roughly $1 billion revenue guide across fiscal 2027 and 2028, and by May disclosed customer demand had already surpassed that figure, yet the stock fell because the guide did not move. In July, Haas said demand "now exceeds $2 billion," and in September the same $2 billion figure produced the biggest rally yet, with the tone changing because supply confidence improved across wafers, substrates, test capacity, and memory. Margins on the in-house silicon are modest by Arm's standards, with first-generation gross margin expected in the high 30% range, maybe low 40s, and a longer-term path to 50%, compared to Arm's corporate 92.5% gross margin on royalties. NVIDIA's Arm-based Vera CPU, which Haas said delivers "up to 50% higher CPU performance and two times greater energy efficiency than comparable x86 systems," feeds Arm's royalty stream, while Qualcomm's Nuvia license trial in Q4 2026 could reprice royalties across the entire industry.

Qualcomm Bets on Cars and Data Centers to Offset Shrinking Apple Business

Qualcomm is counting on automotive and data center growth to replace its shrinking Apple business, with the first hard test arriving in the December quarter when management expects its two custom data center wins to start producing revenue. Automotive sales rose 61% year over year in fiscal Q3 2026, and management raised its fiscal 2026 annual run-rate expectation from above $6 billion in April to about $7 billion by July, helped by BMW choosing Qualcomm as lead compute silicon provider for its next-generation ADAS and digital cockpit. Apple is leaving faster than planned, with Qualcomm now expecting its share of Apple's new iPhone launch to fall materially below the 20% it had assumed and forecasting Apple product revenue to drop about 50% from the September quarter to the December quarter. Management expects non-handset revenue growth over the prior year to jump from 24% in fiscal 2026 to more than 60% in fiscal 2027, growth it says will replace all of Apple's fiscal 2026 product revenue, and it sizes data center revenue at $5 billion in fiscal 2027 and $15 billion in fiscal 2029 inside a non-handset target of $40 billion by fiscal 2029. The doubt is execution, and the CEO concedes the data center business is just starting and that investors want proof a new entrant can deliver.

Altimeter's Gerstner Blames AI 'Negativity' on Political Agenda, Opens Qualcomm and Micron Positions

Brad Gerstner, founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, said on CNBC that he supports AI safety measures but believes recent fears are being exaggerated to advance a political agenda, adding that he wants an investigation into who is behind the negativity and where the money is coming from. Altimeter's second-quarter 13F filings show the fund opened new positions in several technology and AI-related companies, including Qualcomm and Micron Technology. Altimeter bought 1.88 million Qualcomm shares valued at about $347.9 million as of June 30, a position accounting for 3.54% of the fund's reported US equity portfolio. It also acquired 209,520 Micron shares worth roughly $241.8 million, representing 2.46% of the portfolio. Bulls argue the market still views Qualcomm as a smartphone-chip company and is overlooking its potential as an AI data-center supplier, pointing to its High Bandwidth Compute architecture, which Qualcomm says delivers 6 times more bandwidth per watt than high-bandwidth memory and which Microsoft and Meta have agreed to use. The main risk is that HBC remains unproven, with the first chips set to arrive with Qualcomm's upcoming AI250 accelerator and no testing yet at scale in real data centers.

Cirrascale Launches Production Release of Enterprise AI Inference Platform

Cirrascale Cloud Services announced the production release of the Cirrascale Inference Platform, a complete software stack for enterprise-grade AI inference, at the AI Infra Summit in Santa Clara. The platform lets enterprises run open-source models, their own private models, and closed model ecosystems from a single serverless platform, including Google Gemini delivered on premises through Google Distributed Cloud and operated by Cirrascale. Its model and hardware selection layer automatically routes each request to the right model and runs it on the best available accelerator across NVIDIA, AMD, Tenstorrent, and Qualcomm with no code changes required to switch, and teams can fine-tune models on their own private data without that data leaving their environment. The platform includes a turnkey private chat experience connected to a company knowledge base, built-in controls to manage AI spend across teams, and governance guardrails for agentic workloads, aligned with HIPAA, SOC 2, and FedRAMP requirements where required. The Cirrascale Inference Platform is available now across Cirrascale's U.S. and international regions.

Piper Sandler Starts Qualcomm at Neutral With $190 Price Target

Piper Sandler analyst David O'Connor initiated coverage on Qualcomm with a Neutral rating and a $190.00 price target on September 9, arguing that the company's multi-year AI opportunity is attractive but largely reflected in its valuation. Qualcomm has targeted more than $15 billion of data center revenue by fiscal 2029, and Chief Financial Officer Akash Palkhiwala said the data center business will bring in $5 billion for fiscal 2027, with $1 billion of that coming from new custom-chip customers. Piper sees $15 of earnings power for fiscal 2029, expecting data center wins to drive a four-year EPS CAGR of 16%, and projects handsets could fall to roughly 50% of EBIT by fiscal 2029. The firm flagged High Bandwidth Compute as a major part of Qualcomm's strategy, but said more traction and industry acceptance is needed for the technology, and that design wins are already discounted in the share price. Hedge fund positioning showed 95 funds held the stock at the end of the second quarter, up from 71 in the prior quarter, with Marshall Wace holding about 2.48 million shares and Altimeter Capital roughly 1.88 million shares.

Qualcomm Ties Amazon Warrant to Up to $60 Billion in Purchases

Qualcomm's September 8 SEC filing ties Amazon warrants to commercial arrangements, binding orders and actual purchases that can reach a maximum of $60 billion, a ceiling rather than a guaranteed order. Qualcomm issued Amazon a warrant for up to 25 million shares at $161.26, with 3.75 million shares vested at issuance from initial commitments, and the companies will work on server chips, systems and optical connectivity. For Qualcomm, the attraction is customer validation for a data-center push that management wants to scale toward $15 billion of annual revenue by fiscal 2029, though much of the equity vests only if future purchasing milestones are met. The timing matters because Apple is moving modem work in-house, reducing a long-standing source of Qualcomm revenue. Insider Monkey counted 95 hedge funds holding Qualcomm in Q2 2026, up from 71 in Q1, while Amazon ownership climbed to 369 funds from 353 and Apple slipped to 169 funds from 170. At the August 31 settlement, about 33 million Qualcomm shares were sold short, 3.21% of float, with 3.31 days to cover.

Qualcomm Partners With Cornelis Networks on AI Data Center Compute Fabric

Qualcomm is collaborating with Cornelis Networks on new AI data center networking and programmable compute infrastructure. Cornelis Networks has introduced its Active Compute Fabric, an open architecture focused on scale-up and scale-out AI networking with embedded compute. The partnership extends Qualcomm Technologies' recent AI infrastructure work beyond its collaboration with Amazon into broader data center networking projects, though this Active Compute Fabric collaboration with Cornelis captures only one piece of what is shaping Qualcomm's wider AI infrastructure story. Qualcomm develops and licenses wireless technologies worldwide, and the move into AI-focused networking builds on its semiconductor expertise for large data center customers, giving the business another entry point into AI infrastructure alongside handset and other connectivity products. The tie-up reinforces the part of Qualcomm's narrative that leans on data center entry, accelerated by the Alphawave acquisition, to reach new AI inference and edge workloads, while also surfacing the open question of whether early-stage AI and data center pushes can justify heavier research and development spending without squeezing earnings amid competition from players like Nvidia and AMD.
