Qualcomm and Arm open new trial over chip testing tools
Qualcomm and Arm Holdings began a new trial on Monday, with Qualcomm claiming Arm withheld chip testing tools required under their contract. Qualcomm also alleges Arm leaked information to the media about its 2024 threat to cancel a critical license agreement, which hurt negotiations for a chip deal between Qualcomm and Meta Platforms. In the lawsuit filed in US federal court in Delaware, Qualcomm is seeking to stop paying royalties to Arm for up to five years, an amount that could be worth billions of dollars. Judge Maryellen Noreika is considering whether to remove the five-year royalty hold provision from the contract; if removed, Qualcomm would only be able to seek a smaller amount in damages. Arm, owned by Japan's SoftBank Group, has denied breaking the contract and argued it did not harm Qualcomm's chip deals, which it called speculative, and countered that Qualcomm cannot seek damages for the leaked termination letter because Qualcomm leaked confidential details of antitrust investigations into Arm to the media. The five-day jury trial represents another chapter in the difficult relationship between the two companies.

Nvidia's 17x Forward Earnings Shows AI Stocks Far From Bubble, DBS CIO Says
DBS Group Chief Investment Officer Hou Wey Fook said Nvidia's valuation and projected earnings growth show that artificial intelligence-driven technology stocks remain far from bubble territory. The chipmaker trades at 17 times its 12-month forward earnings, according to Bloomberg-compiled data, while its earnings are projected to grow 70% next year. Hou contrasted that with Cisco Systems Inc., which traded at about 100 times earnings before the dot-com crash, saying, "If I describe the poster child of AI trading at mid-teens, how can it be a bubble?" He added that there are still "tailwinds to this play on the semiconductor, this play on AI." Hou nonetheless advocates a "barbell" approach to control overall portfolio volatility, pairing technology stocks on the growth side with investment-grade fixed income for income stability, and sees hedge funds and gold as risk diversifiers in the middle.

FTC Solar Fair Value Raised to US$10.20 as Analysts Split on Orders and Covenant Risk
FTC Solar's fair value estimate has been lifted from US$8.88 to US$10.20, a roughly 15% increase in the updated model, as analysts weigh product traction and new orders against balance sheet risk. UBS lifted its price target slightly to US$3.60 from US$3.50, citing a product driven turnaround and pointing to recent U.S. and Australian orders plus initial shipments on the Fraser Coast project as evidence that the one module in portrait and First Solar compatible tracker solutions are gaining customer acceptance. Roth Capital cut its price target to US$7 from US$10 after what it called light Q2 results and a weak Q3 outlook, flagging execution risk around near term revenue and margin delivery. Roth also noted that FTC Solar breached debt covenants in Q2 2026 and obtained a lender waiver, the third covenant amendment since November 2025, and that Q3 guidance sits below the covenant threshold so further issues may occur. The updated model raised the revenue growth assumption from 42.00% to 47.33% and the future P/E multiple to 33.1x from 22.0x, while lowering the net profit margin assumption to 2.65% from 3.81% and raising the discount rate to 11.68% from 11.44%.

Nvidia Adds Open Agent Safety Platform to AI Infrastructure Stack
Nvidia Corporation is adding the Open Agent Safety Platform to its AI infrastructure stack, an open software and reference system for securing AI agents from testing to deployment that combines OpenShell software with Nvidia Sentry on BlueField DPUs to monitor, control, and isolate potentially harmful agent activity. The launch follows recent incidents involving AI agents from OpenAI and Anthropic, including an OpenAI agent breaching Hugging Face, and Nvidia said the new platform could have prevented that breach by controlling agent permissions and isolating suspicious behavior. More than 100 organizations, including major technology and software enterprise companies, are involved in the platform. Nvidia said the main uncertainty for investors is how it will monetize the platform, since OpenShell is open source and works across different CPU architectures, while Sentry is more directly tied to the company's BlueField hardware, and it is still too early to view the platform as a meaningful short-term earnings driver. Nvidia's forward GAAP P/E of 22.79x sits about 56% below its 5-year average of 51.72x, and its forward price-to-sales ratio of 13.33x is about 32% below its 5-year average of 19.70x. As of July 26, Nvidia held $22.44 billion in cash and cash equivalents and $34.14 billion in marketable debt securities, against about $33.37 billion in total debt, while hedge fund ownership rose from 275 funds at the end of Q1 2026 to 285 funds at the end of Q2 2026 and short interest stood at just 1.27% of float as of September 15, 2026.

TSMC Weighs Overseas Factory Margin Dilution Against Rich Valuation
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is expanding overseas production while trying to protect the earnings that underpin its valuation, raising the question of how much lower-margin capacity it can absorb. TSMC reported a 67.7% gross margin and a 60.3% operating margin in the second quarter, yet at the September 30 market-data snapshot the stock traded at roughly 29 times trailing earnings and 57 times trailing free cash flow. Management described overseas-factory dilution starting at about two to three percentage points of gross margin and moving toward three to four points in later years, and separately expected the N2 ramp to dilute gross margin by three to four points in the second half of 2026. On second-quarter revenue of NT$1.27 trillion, a three-point gross-margin reduction represents approximately NT$38.1 billion of gross profit and four points represent NT$50.8 billion, equal to about 5.4% and 7.2% of reported net income of NT$706.6 billion, respectively. Insider Monkey's hedge fund database showed 249 TSMC holders in Q2 2026, up from 234 in Q1, with Fisher Asset Management raising its position 2% to 18,866,198 and Coatue cutting its position 4% to 8,914,995.

AMD to Acquire World Labs for $8.2 Billion in All-Stock Deal
Advanced Micro Devices has entered a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, the AI model and research lab led by AI pioneer Dr. Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at $8.2 billion that is expected to close by the end of 2026. Rosenblatt reiterated its Buy rating and $700 price target on AMD following the announcement, saying the deal could expand the chipmaker's AI software, modeling and simulation capabilities and accelerate its development of system-level AI platforms while opening opportunities in markets such as robotics. As part of the transaction, Dr. Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. The acquisition carries risks: because AMD will pay the full $8.2 billion purchase price in stock, existing shareholders will be diluted, and the deal does not immediately translate into chip revenue or earnings. The transaction also adds execution and integration risk at a time when AMD's valuation already reflects substantial AI growth expectations, with the stock up more than 180% year-to-date as of October 2 and the company valued at more than $1 trillion. Hedge fund interest rose in the second quarter, with 164 hedge funds holding AMD at the end of the period, up from 134 in the first quarter, while the stock trades at a P/E ratio of 156.79; in Q2 2026 AMD's revenue rose 50% year-over-year to $11.5 billion and diluted EPS jumped 156% to $1.38, and management expects Q3 revenue of approximately $13 billion, about 41% year-over-year growth.

Semtech Fair Value Raised to US$210.33 as Analysts Back Data Center and LoRa
Semtech's modeled fair value has been lifted from US$204.83 to US$210.33, reflecting a modestly higher assessment of the stock's worth in the updated framework. The revision follows a broad pattern of raised price targets from Oppenheimer, Roth Capital, Morgan Stanley, UBS, Seaport Research, and BMO Capital, tied largely to stronger expected contributions from data center and LoRa. Oppenheimer noted that data center exposure has shifted from about 5% of sales a couple of years ago to a figure it expects to exceed 40% by the end of the current year, while Roth Capital and UBS said data center and LoRa together are approaching 60% of the mix and supporting expanding gross margins over time. Morgan Stanley kept an Equal Weight rating even after lifting its target, and Roth Capital flagged potential confusion around guidance following the divestiture of cellular modules, which removes at least US$40m of quarterly sales and associated earnings. Alongside the fair value change, the revenue growth assumption moved from 27.53% to 34.83%, the net profit margin assumption from 24.19% to 30.20%, the future P/E from 58.82x to 32.02x, and the discount rate from 11.27% to 11.40%.
Arm's Data-Center Chip Push Tests Its Licensing Moat
Arm Holdings is moving beyond designing processors for others by selling its own data-center CPU, a shift that could capture more revenue per system but changes its relationship with the customers that license its technology. In its fiscal 2027 first-quarter results released July 29, Arm reported $1.29 billion of revenue, with royalties of $715 million, up 22%, and licensing and other revenue of $574 million, up 23%, while data-center royalty revenue more than doubled. Arm said its AGI CPU had been delivered to initial customers and that it had secured capacity for a $1 billion revenue opportunity across fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028, with management describing demand exceeding $2 billion over those two years, a figure it characterized as demand commentary rather than recognized revenue or a guaranteed order book. At a September 30 market-data snapshot, Arm traded at roughly 59 times enterprise value to trailing revenue and about 205 times trailing free cash flow, and the company had 15,521,694 shares sold short at the September 15 settlement with 3.9 days to cover. The bull case rests on Arm earning royalties from customers' processors while using its own product to accelerate adoption of its architecture, while the bear case is a gradual erosion of neutrality as customers grow reluctant to share roadmaps with a supplier competing for the same server budget.
ARM · Capital · Positive Arm reported fiscal Q1 revenue of $1.29B with royalties up 22% and licensing up 23%, plus a $1B capacity-secured revenue opportunity.
ARM · Competition · Neutral Arm's move to sell its own data-center CPU could capture more revenue per system but risks eroding its licensing neutrality with customers who compete for the same server budget.

Broadcom's $42 Billion Loan to Anthropic Reshapes Vendor Ties
Broadcom is extending a $42 billion convertible note facility to Anthropic, turning the chipmaker into its customer's lender and centralizing control over the AI lab's infrastructure. The facility covers roughly one-third of the $125.2 billion five-year TPU computing lease that sits beneath Anthropic's $518 billion total compute commitment, of which $161.2 billion is owed to Broadcom alone. Under the structure, Broadcom converts its position into equity if Anthropic's eventual IPO succeeds, or retains senior creditor status if the company falters, a dual path Anthropic's prospectus flags as a potential conflict of interest. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has defended the arrangement as a flywheel, while Seaport Research analyst Jay Goldberg said Broadcom is following Nvidia, which has committed up to $100 billion to OpenAI, and AMD, which tied a $5 billion investment in Anthropic to deployment of its MI450 GPUs. Anthropic reported $11.6 billion in Q2 2026 revenue and its first positive adjusted operating profit, but Rothschild & Co managing partner Robert Leitao warned the concentrated bet depends on the two companies generating enough revenue to support the entire financing structure. Broadcom and Anthropic declined to comment on the disclosures.

TSMC Weighs Additional Chip Plants in Texas With Tens of Billions in Spending
TSMC is considering building a new chip manufacturing plant in Texas, with expectations of adding several tens of billions of dollars in investment under a multi-year plan to expand its chipmaking business in the United States. Sources say the Texas project covers the construction of multiple chip plants, and if the investment goes ahead, each plant would cost at least 20 billion dollars. Previously, TSMC pledged to invest 265 billion dollars in Arizona, where several plants are currently under construction. The Texas investment depends on whether the U.S. government extends a tax credit measure for advanced manufacturing that is set to expire at the end of this year. The plan is still at an early stage and no details have been officially disclosed. TSMC is a key chip supplier to Nvidia and Apple, with revenue from wafer manufacturing in America accounting for more than 75% of its revenue from that business this year.
