Corning, Qualcomm and Lumentum to Showcase High-Density Optical Chip Links at ECOC 2026

Corning, Qualcomm and Lumentum plan to showcase a high-density die to die optical connectivity solution at ECOC 2026. The joint demo targets AI scale up architectures that require higher bandwidth, lower latency and tighter power budgets for chip interconnects, and the ECOC 2026 presentation will highlight massively parallel optical D2D links paired with high density fiber to support advanced AI data centers. The project taps Corning's existing role supplying fiber and optical technology to large infrastructure buyers rather than representing a completely new line of work, positioning its multimode fiber alongside Qualcomm's interface IP and Lumentum's VCSEL engines. The unresolved piece is commercial proof: the clearest early sign that this direction is working will be whether Corning starts pointing to concrete D2D or co packaged optics wins in its AI focused optical order book or in follow on agreements tied to the 2027 to 2032 style long term fiber deals already in place.

Cramer Urges Patience as Corning Launches $2 Billion Stock Sale

Jim Cramer told Mad Money viewers to wait for Corning Incorporated to fall further before trimming or holding, citing the company's at-the-market selling program. Corning disclosed on September 11 that it had entered an agreement with Goldman Sachs to sell up to $2 billion of common stock through an at-the-market offering, with proceeds intended for general corporate purposes. The prospectus assumes raising the full $2 billion at $165.96 per share would require issuing 12,051,097 shares, increasing shares outstanding from 861,388,331 to 873,439,428. The offering came as Corning's optical business remained strong: at a September 9 Citi conference, CFO Ed Schlesinger said optical demand was very strong and orders continue to pick up, and second-quarter Optical Communications sales rose 32% year over year to $2.07 billion while core sales increased 17% to $4.74 billion. The bear case centers on execution, as Corning targets a $10 billion scale-up photonics business by the end of the decade tied largely to adoption of NPO and CPO technologies, and expects full-year 2026 capital expenditures of approximately $2 billion compared with $754 million spent in the first half of the year.

Corning Shares Fall 12.7% After $2 Billion At-The-Market Stock Sale Deal With Goldman Sachs

Corning shares fell 12.7% in the afternoon session after the company disclosed an at-the-market equity distribution agreement with Goldman Sachs to sell up to $2 billion of its common stock. Under the terms of the agreement, Corning can offer and sell shares of common stock from time to time through Goldman Sachs as sales agent. The decline reflects investor concerns surrounding shareholder dilution, since an at-the-market offering issues newly created shares directly into the public market, increasing the total outstanding share count and potentially diminishing existing shareholders' proportional ownership and earnings per share. The sizable $2 billion program prompted immediate selling pressure as market participants weighed the potential dilutive impact on equity value. The move follows a 8.7% gain 6 days ago, when Corning announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar supply agreement with Verizon through 2032 to deliver more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber and advanced connectivity solutions.

Corning Falls 12% on $2 Billion At-the-Market Equity Offering

Corning disclosed a $2 billion at-the-market equity distribution program with Goldman Sachs as exclusive sales agent, sending its shares down 12% to $145.61 in Monday afternoon trading and making it the worst performer in the S&P 500. The open-ended structure sets no fixed price or share count, leaving Corning in control of timing and size, and net proceeds are earmarked for general corporate purposes under a shelf registration filed earlier this year. The selloff spread across the AI optical connectivity group, with Coherent down 11% to $273.30, Lumentum down 9% to $843, and Fabrinet down 6% to $389.69, declines the article attributes to sympathy selling tied to weekend commentary from senior AI laboratory figures urging a slower pace of frontier capability gains. NVIDIA sits at the center of that read-through as the key optical connectivity customer, and it has separately committed funding through a warrant arrangement to support Corning's optical capacity expansion. Corning has guided Q3 2026 core sales of $4.9 billion to $5 billion, and the article notes that the company's next disclosure on program usage could matter more to the price than the headline dollar figure.

Cramer Questions Amodei AI Slowdown Essay, Warns on Nvidia

Jim Cramer questioned the motives behind Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's weekend essay calling for a slower pace of AI development, warning that any genuine slowdown in data center construction could weigh on Nvidia stock, according to CNBC. Amodei published the essay Saturday under the title "We Must Pace the Frontier," calling on AI companies to moderate the rate of capabilities development, a position OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk of xAI both voiced support for. Cramer called the essay "extremely self-serving" and offered two theories: that lighter capital expenditures from a slowdown could make Anthropic's IPO prospectus look more attractive, and that inviting regulators to set strict rules would block newer, smaller AI startups from competing. David Sacks, co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and the White House's AI and crypto adviser, countered on X that demanding a preferred regulatory framework as the price of pacing the frontier "will look like blackmail of the public and the political system." Cramer said the more immediate market concern is Nvidia, which he described as financially intertwined with companies that benefit from accelerating data center construction, and noted his charitable trust had already started pulling back from data center holdings, including cutting Corning from the portfolio. AI-linked stocks declined Monday as Wall Street weighed the weekend statements, while President Donald Trump rejected the slowdown argument on Sunday, saying any reduction in pace was unwarranted and would erode the United States' competitive advantage over China.

Amazon Signs Multibillion-Dollar Fiber Deal with Corning

Amazon has signed a multiyear, multibillion-dollar agreement with Corning Incorporated for optical fiber, cable, and connectivity products, marking a strategic move to secure supply for its AI infrastructure. The deal, announced on June 8, is expected to support about 1,000 jobs in North Carolina, as Amazon pushes annual capital spending toward roughly $220 billion. Corning also has a separate agreement to provide Meta with up to $6 billion of products, reinforcing the view that optical infrastructure is becoming a durable bottleneck. Amazon benefits from securing supply and shaping products for its own architecture, while Corning gains scale and a marquee customer, though both face risks: Amazon must spend before AI revenue fully arrives, and Corning faces customer concentration and cyclicality. Hedge-fund ownership increased for both companies, with Amazon held by 369 funds and Corning by 99 funds in the second quarter.

Thaweesuk says US bond yields above 6% could trigger global stock plunge

Thaweesuk Thammasak, an independent scholar of international economics, said at a Thun Hoon seminar that US sanctions on Iran have almost no effect because Iran has been sanctioned for 37 years and has already adapted. Iran has destroyed more than 80% of the main US bases in the Middle East and shot down more than 50 US refueling aircraft in Saudi Arabia, forcing the US to retreat to Jordan and making it unable to fly to Iran. The only remaining option is nuclear, but that is checked by Russia, China, and North Korea. Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea have been closed, causing a global oil shortage and oil prices will surge this October, with the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve having only 14 days of supply left. Thaweesuk estimates that Iran is attacking the heart of the US by pushing bond yields higher, until the US has to intervene by increasing the auction size for buying its own bonds, with BlackRock helping manage the secondary market amid foreign selling of long-term bonds. If bond yields break above 6%, it will lead to a global stock market plunge and the Fed will have to cut rates to 0% immediately, which is an opportunity to buy cheap long-term bonds and sell for profit when prices rebound. For the Thai economy, Thaweesuk sees GDP slowing and staying sluggish because the government lacks a structural reform plan, with 2028 possibly as bad as 2027, and attracting data centers does not help spread income to the grassroots. He recommends watching stocks in the photonics supply chain such as Corning, Coherent, and Fibernet, along with trends in space technology and quantum computing where China is the leader.

Applied Optoelectronics Sinks 12% on $600M Equity Offering

Applied Optoelectronics stock fell 12% to $109.94 early Monday after the company disclosed a plan to raise $600 million through an at-the-market equity offering. The dilution scare dragged peers Lumentum Holdings and Coherent down 5% each, while Corning slipped 3% and the iShares Semiconductor ETF dropped 2%, confirming the selling stayed concentrated inside the optical transceiver corner of tech. Applied Optoelectronics had been up 258% year to date through Friday's close, and the new shelf is meaningful but not existential for a company with a roughly $10.55 billion market cap. Both Lumentum and Coherent recently beat earnings with upbeat outlooks, and Applied Optoelectronics itself posted record Q2 2026 revenue of $191.92 million, up 86.4% year over year, so today's move is a capital-structure event rather than a fundamental reset.

Corning CEO Says Tariff Immunity Stems From 90% Domestic Revenue

Corning CEO Wendell Weeks said tariffs have a de minimis impact on the company because 90% of its U.S. revenue comes from U.S.-origin products and only 1% of U.S. sales are made in China. Speaking on Jim Cramer's Mad Money on August 14, 2026, Weeks attributed this insulation to Corning's philosophy of locating factories close to customers to compete on innovation. The company's stock has surged 93% year to date, supported by second-quarter core EPS of $0.78 beating consensus and a 32% rise in Optical Communications revenue. Corning supplies Apple, Nvidia, and Amazon from U.S. facilities, a footprint built for customer proximity that also shields it from import duties.

NVIDIA shifts $500 billion AI factory financing risk to private capital consortium

NVIDIA has structured a deal with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR to mobilize over $500 billion in third-party capital for AI factory construction, offloading lending risk from its own balance sheet. BofA analyst Vivek Arya notes the burden sits with the consortium, not NVIDIA, freeing up an estimated 15% of projected free cash flow for stock buybacks. Neocloud operators CoreWeave and Nebius saw immediate share gains as the arrangement eases their financing constraints. The private capital firms gain a scalable, high-yield tech credit platform, while memory and optical component suppliers may benefit if data center builds accelerate. Analysts caution that memorandums of understanding do not equal deployed capital and that demand pull-forward and physical constraints remain risks.

Mark Cuban Warns Nvidia's AI Financing Could Crumble the Market

Billionaire Mark Cuban warned that Nvidia's aggressive AI financing could destabilize the broader market. Cuban compared Nvidia's role to the IPO machine of the dot-com era, noting that the company is funding customers through financing, revenue-sharing, and minimum-revenue guarantees. Nvidia has already committed more than $40 billion to AI investments in early 2026, including stakes and financing packages tied to OpenAI, Corning, and Iren. Legal analysts caution that AI data center funding involves layered private credit, securitizations, and off-balance-sheet vehicles, where distress in one node could propagate across banks, insurers, and pension funds. If AI demand slows or customers struggle to repay debts, the interconnected leverage could spread credit stress beyond tech stocks.

Coherent shares slide on reports of new US data center export curbs to China

Coherent shares fell as reports emerged that the United States is considering new restrictions on certain data center components supplied to China. The potential rules target technology exports involving high performance computing and advanced data infrastructure, and the stock reaction reflects investor concern over possible demand risks. Coherent, which sits at the intersection of optics and semiconductors, has meaningful revenue exposure to Chinese data center build outs, and tighter export controls could limit which products it can ship, slow order approvals, or restrict which customers in China are allowed to buy. The policy conversation remains fluid, and investors are watching for management commentary, customer ordering patterns, and final rule details, while peers such as Lumentum, Marvell, and Corning also saw share price moves as markets repriced regulatory risk across the optical and chip supply chain.

BofA Sees 66% Upside for Corning After 25% Monthly Drop

Corning shares have fallen 25.48% over the past month to $146.64 after soft third-quarter guidance overshadowed a second-quarter earnings beat, yet BofA Securities analyst Wamsi Mohan raised his price target to $243, implying roughly 66% upside. The selloff was driven by a revenue miss of 2.69% and conservative Q3 sales guidance of $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion, which triggered a valuation reset from a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 64. Mohan's bull case applies a 37 times multiple to a calendar 2028 earnings-per-share estimate of $6.50, up from $5.95, and rests on AI optical interconnect demand, the upgraded Springboard plan targeting $40 billion in annualized sales by end of 2030, and optionality from glass substrates for advanced chiplets. While Corning dropped sharply, optical peers Ciena and Coherent saw far shallower declines of 7.5% and 13.56% respectively over the same period. The consensus analyst target among 16 covering analysts stands at $193.40, implying roughly 32% upside from current levels.
