Intel wins Apple, AI demand lifts TSMC, but oversupply fears hit chip stocks
▲
Intel gains Apple and advances 18A-P node Intel signed Apple as a foundry customer and its 18A-P manufacturing process entered risk production, with Google and Nvidia also evaluating Intel. This validates U.S. foundry capacity and adds competition, though TSMC still holds over 90% of leading-edge production.
This is a major new development that boosts Intel's foundry business and signals growing competition in the industry.
▲
AI demand drives TSMC growth and price hikes AI demand kept capacity tight, driving TSMC's 39% revenue growth and 5–10% price hikes. Hyperscaler capital spending (Alphabet, AWS, Oracle) and massive fab investments (Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron) support expansion.
This shows the strong positive impact of AI demand on foundry revenues and pricing, a key driver for the sector.
▼
Oversupply fears and AI spending concerns hit chip stocks Samsung and SK Hynix shares fell 9% on oversupply fears, the Magnificent Seven dropped over 13% on AI spending-cut concerns, and SOXX fell 8% after Broadcom's softer forecast.
This highlights the emerging risks and negative market sentiment that could impact foundry demand and valuations.
▼
SpaceX's Terafab venture adds long-term competition SpaceX's new Terafab venture with Tesla, xAI, and Intel adds long-term competition to the foundry space, potentially disrupting the current market structure.
This is a new competitive threat that could alter the foundry landscape in the long term.

AI chip demand stays hot; TSMC expands 2nm and eyes Texas
▲
TSMC 2nm output raised on 10-20% higher customer orders TSMC may reach about 120,000 wafers a month of 2-nanometer output by end-2026, up from earlier estimates of 90,000-100,000, as Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm and MediaTek lift orders 10-20%. This shows leading-edge demand is still outrunning supply, keeping foundry orders and pricing strong.
It is the clearest new evidence that AI demand keeps leading-edge foundry capacity sold out.
▲
Custom AI chip orders keep stacking up for foundries Piper Sandler sees Google TPU sales reaching $104 billion by 2028, about 2.4 million chips, and Volato signed $1.17 billion of AMD GPU infrastructure orders. Both imply years of extra leading-edge wafer demand for foundries, adding to the backlog from AI chip designers.
It shows new, large custom-AI-chip commitments that translate into future foundry wafer demand.
▲
TSMC weighs multibillion-dollar Texas chip campus TSMC is considering a new Texas campus with multiple fabs, each costing at least $20 billion, to handle unrelenting AI demand. It depends on US lawmakers extending an advanced-manufacturing tax credit. This would add future leading-edge supply outside Taiwan, though it is early-stage and years away.
It is a new capital-expansion signal that could add future foundry supply and reduce geographic concentration.
◆
China may allow Nvidia sales, hitting domestic foundries Chinese chip stocks fell, with SMIC down 3.7% and Hua Hong nearly 5%, on a report Beijing may let some firms buy Nvidia's RTX Pro 5500 chips. If approved, it could undercut demand for domestic Chinese foundries, a negative for that sub-area, while the broader foundry theme is unaffected.
It is the main new negative and shows a real counterweight, but it is limited to Chinese domestic foundries.

Foundry boom: record profits, sold-out AI capacity, but risks loom
▲
AI demand drives record foundry results TSMC posted record profits and sales, raised forecasts, and hiked prices as AI capacity sold out through 2029. Hyperscaler backlogs topped $2.3T, equipment orders surged, and new fabs and custom-chip deals locked in years of demand.
This is the core positive force: booming AI demand lifted foundry results and locked in future business.
▲
China's SMIC joins the upcycle China's SMIC joined the upcycle, with profits tripling, showing the demand recovery spread beyond the leading-edge players.
It shows the boom broadened to a major Chinese foundry, a new development this quarter.
▼
AI spending jitters and tariff threats AI spending jitters and cheap Chinese models triggered selloffs, while Morgan Stanley questioned $1.2T in spending. New US tariffs raised costs, and China's mature-node push intensified competition.
These are the main counterweights: doubts about AI spending and new trade barriers that could hurt demand and raise costs.
▼
Geopolitical and cost pressures mount Taiwan blockade risk, export controls, and proposed chip tariffs threatened supply chains. Overseas fabs and the 2nm ramp diluted TSMC's margins, Samsung's yields lagged, and a severe memory shortage plus a Fed rate hike threatened costs and demand.
These are the key risks that could disrupt supply and squeeze profits, balancing the positive demand story.

Participants include Dai Nippon Printing, Toshiba Information Systems under Toshiba, major US semiconductor design firm Synopsys, and Indian IT services giant Infosys.
TSMC Weighs Overseas Factory Margin Dilution Against Rich Valuation
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is expanding overseas production while trying to protect the earnings that underpin its valuation, raising the question of how much lower-margin capacity it can absorb. TSMC reported a 67.7% gross margin and a 60.3% operating margin in the second quarter, yet at the September 30 market-data snapshot the stock traded at roughly 29 times trailing earnings and 57 times trailing free cash flow. Management described overseas-factory dilution starting at about two to three percentage points of gross margin and moving toward three to four points in later years, and separately expected the N2 ramp to dilute gross margin by three to four points in the second half of 2026. On second-quarter revenue of NT$1.27 trillion, a three-point gross-margin reduction represents approximately NT$38.1 billion of gross profit and four points represent NT$50.8 billion, equal to about 5.4% and 7.2% of reported net income of NT$706.6 billion, respectively. Insider Monkey's hedge fund database showed 249 TSMC holders in Q2 2026, up from 234 in Q1, with Fisher Asset Management raising its position 2% to 18,866,198 and Coatue cutting its position 4% to 8,914,995.
TSMC Weighs Additional Chip Plants in Texas With Tens of Billions in Spending
TSMC is considering building a new chip manufacturing plant in Texas, with expectations of adding several tens of billions of dollars in investment under a multi-year plan to expand its chipmaking business in the United States. Sources say the Texas project covers the construction of multiple chip plants, and if the investment goes ahead, each plant would cost at least 20 billion dollars. Previously, TSMC pledged to invest 265 billion dollars in Arizona, where several plants are currently under construction. The Texas investment depends on whether the U.S. government extends a tax credit measure for advanced manufacturing that is set to expire at the end of this year. The plan is still at an early stage and no details have been officially disclosed. TSMC is a key chip supplier to Nvidia and Apple, with revenue from wafer manufacturing in America accounting for more than 75% of its revenue from that business this year.

Korea's trade surplus hits record $23B on chip and auto export surge
South Korea's trade surplus widened to a record $23 billion in the first 20 days of September as exports accelerated, led by strong semiconductor shipments and a sharp rebound in autos and auto parts, according to Goldman Sachs. Exports per working day rose 7.4% month-on-month on a seasonally adjusted basis, accelerating from 4.1% in the previous month, while total exports during the first 20 days climbed 14.9%, compared with a 7.2% increase previously, with some of the acceleration reflecting front-loading ahead of the lunar Mid-Autumn Festival holidays in late September. Semiconductors were the biggest contributor, with chip exports increasing 16% and accounting for roughly 60% of the sequential rise in overall exports, while other technology exports fell 1% as higher handset and household appliance shipments were offset by weaker computer exports. Outside technology, autos and auto parts exports jumped 60.8% after contracting for two consecutive months and accounted for roughly a quarter of the overall sequential increase, and demand from the U.S. was particularly strong, with exports to the country surging 48.1% from 13.6% previously and accounting for slightly more than half of the overall sequential export gain. Shipments to Taiwan and the European Union climbed 43.6% and 34.7% respectively, together contributing about 30% of the increase, while exports to mainland China grew by a more modest 1.2%, and total imports during the 20-day period increased 10.5% compared with 1.7% previously.

September Tankan: Large Manufacturers' DI Expected to Improve 4 Points to Plus 26
Forecasts from 12 private think tanks and other institutions for the Bank of Japan's September National Short-Term Economic Survey of Enterprises, or Tankan, to be released on the 1st of next month, were all in by the 25th. The average forecast for the business conditions diffusion index, which gauges corporate sentiment, stands at plus 26 for large manufacturers, a 4-point improvement from the previous June survey. The dominant view is that demand related to artificial intelligence and semiconductors will lift sentiment, and this would mark the sixth consecutive quarter of improvement for manufacturers. While industries producing equipment and materials related to semiconductor manufacturing, such as electrical machinery and production machinery, are analyzed as performing well, it has been pointed out that automobiles may act as a drag due to sluggish growth in export volumes. The average forecast for large non-manufacturers is 36, down 1 point from the June survey, with many companies expecting flat or slightly worse conditions due to weak inbound demand and rising costs such as fuel and labor expenses. Based on this Tankan, the Bank of Japan plans to analyze risks such as higher crude oil prices and AI-driven upward pressure on prices, and to look for the timing of an additional interest rate hike.
Trump and Xi Discuss AI, Trade and Taiwan at the White House
President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping held a joint summit at the White House, discussing artificial intelligence, security and technology. It marked the first joint statement between the two leaders, amid concerns among executives at major technology companies and some U.S. policymakers that AI could pose a threat to humanity. Trump affirmed that AI development should proceed freely in order to preserve the United States' advantage, while China criticised U.S. semiconductor export controls as creating restrictions on Chinese companies. Xi Jinping said China and the United States have both the capability and the responsibility to develop and manage AI for the benefit of humanity, and that it should always remain under human control. He also called on Trump to change the U.S. position on Taiwan by opposing Taiwan independence. Trump said the two sides had made substantial progress on points of disagreement, referring to efforts to expand access to the Chinese market for U.S. farmers and ranchers under the trade committee mechanism, and he did not mention the Taiwan issue. After the meeting, China announced that it had reached a new joint agreement with the United States, according to Xinhua News Agency, without disclosing details. A few hours earlier, the United States had announced an extension of the trade truce with China by another two months, until January 10. Xi Jinping also said there is potential to add direct flights between the two countries, and announced that two pandas will arrive at Zoo Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia within a few days.
Rapidus Could List in the U.S. and Build Production There If Mass Production Succeeds, Says LDP Semiconductor Caucus Chair
Takeshi Yamagiwa, chair of the Liberal Democratic Party's parliamentary league on semiconductor strategy, said in an interview with Reuters that Rapidus, the government-backed company aiming for mass production of advanced semiconductors, is "miraculously on schedule at this stage," and that if mass production is achieved, customers will be secured and "financing and an initial public offering will both go smoothly." He added that in the future, a U.S. listing and local production in the demand-heavy American market are "a possibility." Government research and development outsourcing funds for Rapidus have so far reached about 2.4 trillion yen, and last July the company confirmed the operation of a prototype 2-nanometer-class chip at its base in Chitose, Hokkaido, and is moving ahead with preparations for mass production. Yamagiwa said, "It is important to have a mass production system in place by around this time next year and to show the world chips being mass produced." He noted that, reflecting on the "defeat" Japan suffered after holding the top share in the 1980s and then being forced into decline as trade restrictions under the Japan-U.S. semiconductor agreement tightened, the country this time is working with American companies from the outset and aiming for a "win-win relationship," and that a stance of "not half-heartedly withdrawing public support, with the government committed to the very end," is a major difference from the semiconductor strategy of decades ago. Regarding reports that South Korea's SK Hynix is considering building a memory chip plant in Japan, he said, "If there is a manufacturing base in Japan, the supply chain will be stronger. Basically, it should be welcomed," while adding that Japan-South Korea cooperation must be weighed against the risk of technology and talent outflow, and that "we must look strictly at how far we can work together."

TSMC to Raise Wafer Prices 3% to 6% Starting in 2027
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing plans to raise wafer foundry prices by 3% to 6% starting in 2027, with the largest increases targeted at advanced process nodes used in high performance computing and AI chips. Management is preparing the multi-year pricing update as capacity remains tight for AI-related demand and advanced packaging through 2030. The move is intended to give the company more room to earn a return on heavy spending for 2nm and other advanced facilities, tilting its foundry model further toward higher-value capacity rather than pure volume. Raising prices first can signal confidence in tight supply, but it also invites Samsung and Intel to adjust their own pricing, and any meaningful discount or aggressive incentives from rivals could pull future AI programs or advanced packaging work away. The key test for investors is whether customers lock in multi-year agreements through 2027 at the higher wafer rates, especially on 2nm and related advanced nodes, with disclosed capacity commitments, utilization data around those leading processes, and management commentary on pricing discipline as the metrics to track.

TSMC and ASML Launch 12-Inch EUV Photomask Initiative Targeting 2031 Pilot Line
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and ASML Holding announced a collaborative industry initiative on September 8 to transition the semiconductor sector to a 12-inch Extreme Ultraviolet photomask format, replacing the 6-inch masks chipmakers currently use for High NA EUV systems. The shift aims to boost scanner productivity, eliminate stitching constraints on ultra-large chips, and lower long-term advanced node manufacturing costs, with the initiative targeting a pilot line by 2031 and 12-inch High-NA production by 2033. TSMC plans to adopt High-NA EUV starting in 2030, with the 12-inch masks providing a multi-year roadmap for scaling complex AI architectures. For ASML, establishing a 12-inch standard locks in the long-term economic case for its High-NA scanner line, supporting its 15% revenue expansion outlook, while for TSMC the larger format helps defend its leading-edge and AI/HPC manufacturing dominance. The decade-long roadmap carries execution risk, as the entire global supply chain, from mask blanks and inspection equipment to automated handling, must retool from scratch, and TSMC faces near-term gross margin dilution from its N2 ramp and overseas fab expansions while ASML contends with gross margin pressure in late 2025 and geopolitical growth uncertainties through 2026.

Broadcom Sets $230 Billion AI Revenue Target for Fiscal 2028
Broadcom expects AI chip revenue of roughly $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in fiscal 2028, according to Reuters, a target that doubles the delivery test for the custom AI chip and networking supplier. The company reported $16.7 billion in fiscal third-quarter AI semiconductor revenue, about 56% of its $29.59 billion total. Shares fell about 2% to $348.02 at 10.40am ET on Thursday morning as investors weighed the promise against execution risk. At that price, Broadcom trades 15.36% below the $411.18 GF Value cited by GuruFocus. Doubling AI sales in a year demands that chips be made, packaged and delivered on schedule, and any slip in supply or customer deployments would leave the revenue target offering little comfort.
ASML Wins Broader High-NA EUV Commitments as Shares Slip 1.8%
ASML Holding won broader customer commitments for its roughly $400 million High-NA EUV machines, even as its U.S. shares fell about 1.8% to $1,713.41 in Thursday morning trading. Intel is already using High-NA in volume production on selected chip layers, Samsung plans to bring the technology into DRAM production in 2028, and TSMC targets advanced chip production from 2030. ASML says its EXE:5200B can print features 1.7 times smaller than its current NXE systems in a single exposure, potentially sparing customers costly manufacturing steps. The catch is price: chipmakers need enough output and yield gains to earn back the cost of each machine, and ASML needs those gains to turn early commitments into lasting demand. CLSA Says AI Chip Shortage Could Last Until 2030, Calls 2028 Peak Forecast 'Utterly Wrong'
CLSA's Bhavtosh Vajpayee said the AI semiconductor cycle will not peak in 2028, calling that expectation "utterly wrong" and projecting the current chip shortage will persist until roughly 2030. Speaking to CNBC on Wednesday, Vajpayee said demand for GPUs and custom AI chips currently exceeds supply by about 73%, and he expects upstream semiconductor and hardware companies to benefit as the shortage worsens alongside expanding AI infrastructure spending. He also noted that large semiconductor companies trade at lower valuation multiples than many other parts of the AI ecosystem. Vajpayee highlighted Meta's Muse as a notable recent development for making AI agent creation easier through simple language commands, and said similar advances should emerge in China, where companies including Alibaba are developing smaller AI models. He pointed to Apple as particularly important because smartphones already sit at the center of consumers' daily lives and could become the primary gateway for accessing AI services, while CLSA sees clearer opportunities in AI hardware suppliers than among model developers, where he said it remains too early to determine the eventual winners.

Intel Can Fill Only Half of CPU Orders, CEO Lip-Bu Tan Says
Intel Corporation can supply only about half of the processor demand its customers are asking for, chief executive Lip-Bu Tan said at Splunk's .conf26 conference in Denver this month, adding that other chief executives have called him asking for more chips and that he has had to apologize. The company has pointed to constraints across leading-edge wafers, memory and substrates, and its latest quarterly report lists industry-wide substrate and memory shortages among the risks to its supply chain. In May of this year, Tan said Intel had asked customers adopting its advanced packaging to help prepay Taiwanese and Japanese suppliers to secure capacity, with four suppliers in Taiwan and two in Japan seeking upfront commitments. Intel's second quarter revenue reached $16.1 billion, comfortably above the midpoint of its own guidance, and the stock rose 12% on September 21 in a broad rally across chip stocks. The number to watch when Intel reports in October is whether shipments actually rise, because that is the only place the unmet demand can show up as revenue.

SK Hynix Weighs First US Memory Production at Intel's Ohio Site
SK Hynix is exploring what would be its first-ever memory chip manufacturing in the United States, holding talks with Intel Corporation about leasing part of Intel's long-delayed Ohio complex or forming a venture involving Intel and large cloud customers, Reuters reported on September 16, though SK Hynix said no specific plan has been finalized. Intel has committed enormous capital to Ohio, with the broader project potentially reaching around $100 billion over time, and delays have pushed planned production into the next decade, so a tenant or joint-venture partner could help Intel share the financial burden of the buildout. The talks matter for Micron Technology, Inc. because one of its strongest strategic advantages is being the major U.S.-based memory producer while AI has made DRAM and HBM increasingly scarce, and a successful SK Hynix move could eventually erode part of that U.S.-supply differentiation by giving U.S. cloud companies another potential domestic supplier. Hedge fund holdings rose for both chipmakers in the second quarter, with 138 funds holding Intel, up from 112 in the first quarter, and 184 funds holding Micron, up from 154, while Intel had about 152.2 million shares sold short as of August 31, roughly 3% of public float and 1.7 days to cover. The talks do not rescue Intel's foundry strategy or weaken Micron overnight, but they show memory manufacturing becoming strategic enough that SK Hynix is considering advanced capacity on American soil.

US and China Vie for AI Dominance as Pax Silica and WAICO Reach a Fork in the Road
The United States and China are competing for dominance in the race to spread artificial intelligence, accelerating their efforts to build self-centered "AI economic spheres." Late last year, the United States launched Pax Silica, an initiative to build secure supply chains for AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals, and the number of signatory countries and regions, centered on allies and friendly nations such as Japan and the United Kingdom, has grown to 25. In July of this year, China also established the World AI Cooperation Organization, or WAICO, with 29 countries to extend cheap AI models and communications infrastructure across the Global South. Dubbed an "AI version of the Belt and Road," it now has 38 participating countries. The US State Department was reported to have drafted a document asking Pax Silica signatories not to join WAICO, pressuring them to take a loyalty test, but Kazakhstan has joined both, and Uzbekistan, Singapore, and Bangladesh are also exploring "dual participation." The US-China summit on the 24th is likely to be a venue for gauging the future of cooperation and division over AI.
