Upwork cuts guidance as AI and weak labor market bite

  • Full-year guidance slashed on AI and labor weakness Upwork lowered full-year revenue and earnings guidance, blaming AI automation and a soft labor market. The stock fell sharply. This is the core reason the company is worth less now: management itself expects slower growth and lower profit than before.

This is the single biggest new event driving UPWK lower this period.

  • AI competition threatens to replace freelance work Investors worry that AI tools can do tasks that clients used to hire freelancers for, shrinking Upwork's core market. Analysts cited this risk when downgrading the stock. If AI substitutes rather than routes work to Upwork, demand falls and the stock stays under pressure.

AI displacement is the main structural fear behind the selloff and the guidance cut.

  • Soft labor market reduces freelance demand A weak jobs market means fewer companies and workers turn to freelance platforms. Upwork's CEO specifically cited no labor market improvement as a reason for the weaker outlook. This adds a cyclical drag on top of the AI threat.

Labor market weakness is a distinct, named driver of the guidance cut and demand slowdown.

  • New credit line and AI assistant integrations Upwork secured a $150 million credit facility for flexibility and launched a Claude Connector, embedding its talent marketplace into Anthropic's AI assistant. These moves could revive user growth and show Upwork adapting to AI rather than being replaced by it.

This is the main new positive counterweight to the negative guidance and AI fears.

Upwork secures $150 million credit facility and launches Claude Connector integration

Upwork Inc. entered into a new secured revolving credit facility of up to US$150.0 million, expandable by an additional US$50.0 million, maturing on June 23, 2029, to support working capital, potential acquisitions, and repayment of existing convertible debt. The company also launched the Upwork Claude Connector inside Anthropic's Claude, embedding its 18 million–strong talent marketplace directly into a leading AI assistant. The new credit facility modestly strengthens balance sheet flexibility but does not directly change near-term demand risk around slow client acquisition and enterprise volatility. The Claude Connector launch, together with earlier ChatGPT and Uma releases, could reignite top-of-funnel activity and mitigate the risk that generative AI replaces rather than routes work through Upwork. Upwork's narrative projects $1.1 billion revenue and $205.0 million earnings by 2029, requiring 10.8% yearly revenue growth and an $89.6 million earnings increase from $115.4 million today.

Upwork Launches Claude Connector to Hire Freelancers Directly Inside Anthropic's AI Assistant

Upwork Inc. has introduced the Upwork Claude Connector, a new app inside Anthropic's Claude that lets businesses find and hire expert freelancers without leaving the AI assistant. The integration allows users to describe a project and immediately receive a shortlist of recommended talent from the Upwork Marketplace, which includes more than 18 million professionals across 130 categories of work. Users can also create a job post through the conversation and then continue to Upwork to make the hire, where Upwork's AI work agent Uma helps manage the project to completion. The launch follows an Upwork app for ChatGPT in April and is part of a broader effort to embed access to human talent inside the tools where ideas take shape. According to recent Upwork research, 74% of small and medium-sized businesses plan to increase freelancer hiring in the near term, much of it tied to AI-driven growth initiatives.
