Commerce Ministry orders 30-50% cut in egg exports to cope with floods, warns against price gouging

The Ministry of Commerce has ordered egg exporters to slow shipments and cut volumes by about 30-50% during the flood situation so that domestic demand for eggs can be met. Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supajee Suthumpun said she had instructed relevant agencies to closely monitor the volume and prices of consumer goods in flood-hit areas and to prevent opportunistic price increases. The Department of Internal Trade has coordinated with farmers, retailers, wholesalers and exporters to manage egg supplies adequately, and has asked the Department of Livestock Development to extend the period before laying hens in cages are retired. Wattanasak Sueaiam, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, said cooperation had been sought from egg farms to speed up deliveries of eggs into normal trade channels and stressed that hoarding or opportunistic price hikes would not be allowed. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce is preparing to hold a "Thai Help Thai - Blue Flag" event, bringing consumer goods, cleaning supplies and home repair materials to be sold at reasonable prices in areas where the situation is easing and entering the post-flood recovery phase. On 2 October 2026, Supajee, together with Commerce Ministry Permanent Secretary Poonpong Naiyanapakorn and Wattanasak, helped pack 2,000 relief bags for distribution to people affected by flooding in Prachin Buri province. People who encounter shortages of goods, unfair sales practices, missing price labels, or who suspect hoarding or opportunistic price increases can call the Department of Internal Trade hotline on 1569.

Chief executive Sherman Miller said conventional shell egg pricing remains under pressure from the supply imbalance while underlying demand stays healthy, and the company noted Specialty Shell Eggs and Prepared Foods now represent 54.1% of net sales, up from 37.1% a year earlier. Cal-Maine repurchased 66,601 shares for $5.0 million during the quarter and will not pay a dividend, with a cumulative loss of $94.5 million to be recovered before any future dividend, while production expansion projects are expected to lift Prepared Foods capacity more than 60% by the first half of fiscal 2028.

Poultry Association Forecasts Lower Egg Prices as Production Recovers and Supply-Demand Eases

The Japan Poultry Association said on the 28th that, regarding supply and demand for eggs, which have remained at high price levels, it expects production in the second half of 2026 through the first half of 2027 to exceed the same period a year earlier. As a result, supply and demand will ease, and wholesale prices are expected to fall below the same period last year, when they approached record highs. The association estimated that, after the number of birds raised declined due to culling following outbreaks of avian influenza since last October, the reintroduction of chicks has progressed, and production in the first half of 2027 will exceed the same period a year earlier by 3.7 percent.
EGG · Supply · Negative Production recovery and reintroduction of chicks after avian-influenza culling will ease supply-demand and push egg wholesale prices below last year's levels.

Pork Loin and Eggs Hit Record Highs in Agriculture Ministry's September Retail Survey

In its September food price trend survey released on the 15th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries reported that the national average retail price of pork loin reached 293 yen per 100 grams, marking a record high since the survey began in August 2003. Eggs, for a mixed-size pack of 10, came in at 309 yen, matching the record highs logged in March, May, and June of this year. The rise in pork prices stems from higher import prices driven by the yen's depreciation and growing global demand, which has strengthened appetite for domestically produced pork. For eggs, the spread of avian influenza last year was a factor, along with increased demand as fast-food chains and others launched moon-viewing seasonal products that use eggs to represent the moon.
EGG · Supply · Positive Egg prices match record highs as last year's avian influenza outbreak tightened supply, alongside seasonal fast-food demand.
LEANHOG · Demand · Positive Record-high pork loin retail prices driven by strong global and domestic demand for pork, supporting lean hog futures.

Egg prices rise 15.5% in nine days; impact on supply chain companies diverges

Egg prices have climbed again. Sam's Club announced that its selected fresh eggs have been raised from 18.9 yuan per box to 21.8 yuan per box. A 30-egg pack of fresh eggs at Hema Fresh rose to 22.8 yuan per box in June, up 28% from April. Mysteel agricultural product data shows that on August 17, the average egg price in major producing areas rose to 5.15 yuan per jin, an increase of 0.69 yuan per jin from August 8, with a cumulative gain of 15.5% over nine days and a year-on-year surge of 58.46%, the highest level for the same period in nearly three years. The core driver of this round of soaring egg prices is a deep contraction on the supply side combined with concentrated release of demand. In 2025, the laying hen farming industry was in a loss-making state for 11 months of the year. Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs data shows that in May 2026, the national laying hen inventory fell to 1.279 billion birds, down 1.24% month-on-month and down 4.24% year-on-year. The sharp fluctuation in egg prices has had markedly different effects on listed companies at different stages of the supply chain. Egg product processor Ovodan Egg Industry is under the most direct cost pressure, with egg costs accounting for about 80% of its total product costs. Upstream layer breeder company Xiaoming Agriculture is on an indirectly favorable transmission path, with chicken product sales volume and sales revenue in July both rising month-on-month and year-on-year. Xiangjia Stock, which has an egg business, is a direct beneficiary of this price increase, with its egg business already profitable in the second quarter. On August 21, shares of these egg supply chain companies closed lower across the board, with Ovodan Egg Industry falling 8.84% and its total market value dropping to 1.522 billion yuan.
EGG · Supply · Positive Egg prices surge due to supply contraction and demand release, directly raising egg prices.
苏州欧福蛋业股份有限公司 · Supply · Negative Egg costs account for ~80% of product costs, squeezing margins as prices rise.
002982.CS · Demand · Positive Egg price surge directly benefits its egg business, already profitable in Q2.
300967.CS · Demand · Positive Chicken product sales volume and revenue rose in July, benefiting from favorable transmission.
